How to Remove Black Spots from an Oak Frame

Black spots on oak are often caused by moisture reacting with iron and the timber’s natural tannins. Follow our short guide using FIDDES Wood Reviver Gel.

Black or blue-black marks on oak are usually caused by moisture allowing iron particles to react with the timber’s natural tannins. The iron may come from steel tools, fixings, grinding dust or wire wool.

Our recommended treatment

HB OAK Kits recommends FIDDES Back to Natural Wood Reviver Gel.

How to use it

  1. Remove any loose dirt, steel filings or other possible sources of iron. Do not remove structural fixings.
  2. Protect nearby metalwork, stonework and plants. Wear protective gloves, goggles and suitable clothing.
  3. Test the product on a small, inconspicuous area first.
  4. Lightly dampen the oak, then apply the FIDDES gel generously in the direction of the grain.
  5. Leave it to work for approximately 20 minutes, keeping the surface damp if necessary.
  6. Scrub the area with the supplied brush, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  7. Allow the oak to dry completely before assessing the result or applying another treatment.

FIDDES advises against pressure washing and recommends keeping pets away until the treated surface has been rinsed and is fully dry.

Avoid using steel wool or a wire brush, as these can leave more iron particles behind and cause the staining to return. If the marks are fuzzy, the timber feels soft, or the staining surrounds structural metalwork, contact HB OAK Kits before proceeding.
